Initially, I conceived this project as an experiment in visual reconciliation based on real subjects. However, during the research phase, I encountered significant difficulties in sourcing an archive of faces that allowed for the degree of neutrality and systematic control my practice requires. This resistance from the "real" prompted a crucial methodological shift: generating the subjects myself using Artificial Intelligence.
The process evolved into a closed-circuit system, where each final portrait is the result of an algorithmic synthesis between previously generated identities. Once these synthetic entities were produced, I sought the point of suture between generated data and verisimilitude. Ghosting the Index bears witness to how digital identities are no longer mere representations of existing individuals, but autonomous entities floating in a post-real limbo.
The project explores the collapse of the photographic index: while photography has traditionally been considered the "trace" of something that once stood before the lens, these images are traces of an absence. Each face in this grid is a "log" of an algorithmic transaction: a digital ghost that challenges our perception of truth and the stability of identity in the age of synthetic reproducibility.
